AISBackup: Restore Scenario 2 - Restoring the C: Drive.

This procedure is also valid for restoring any set of folders back to a specified backup date.

What you will need

  • Either: The current running Windows session.

  • or: The PC with a restored copy of the Emergency System Backup (Windows 95, 98 & ME only).

  • or: a PC with a new build of  Windows and Drivers that give access to the backup media, if appropriate. (Windows NT, 2000 & XP).

  • And: The C: drive backup media.

  • And: A copy of AISBackup (A trial version will also work).

The Restore Process

Start AISBackup.

The Program Settings and Options dialogue may be displayed, please make any corrections before proceeding. Note, any changes made here are temporary and will be overwritten during the restore process.

Select the backup job from which you want to restore, if this not in the list of backups select the menu option Tools / Open Job from Backup Media and load the Backup Contents File from the last backup media used, e.g. last CD of the backup set.

Loading a backup job from the backup media.

  • Place the last CD of the C: drive backup in the CD Writer.

  • On AISBackup select the menu option  Tools / Load Job From Backup Media.

  • Using the Open Backup Database dialogue open the Backup Contents File (.bdb).

  • If asked whether you want to re-instate the backup job and backup select Yes.

The Restore.

  • Select Restore from Backup.

  • Even if the backup only contains one session select the date from which you want to restore from in the Select Session dialogue, do not leave the default All Sessions selected. Try and avoid red dates because they were incomplete.

All Sessions should not be selected as this is not appropriate for restores following an Emergency System Backup restore or restoring to a specified date.

  • If you are going to restore the whole of the C: drive, click next to the C: drive in the folders window so that it becomes  , see below.

  • You may de-select any folders or files that you do not want to restore.

If you are moving the current PC back to an earlier date you may wish to de-select the AISBackup program folder, this way details of more up-to-date backups will remain on the PC.

  • Do not de-select the Windows folder or you may end up with a corrupt Windows restore. (e.g. Windows directory not synchronised with the Program Directories).

  • Click Next.

  • Leave Original path set, unless you intend to restore to a new drive or partition.

  • Leave Delete files that did not exist... and Delete folders that are not on backup session selected.

  • Optionally de-Select Restore Empty Folders.

  • Click Next.

  • On the Restore Options form leave 'Replace Duplicates with Different Files Only (Older or Newer)' selected. This will replace only changed files from those that have already been restored.

  • AISBackup will compare the core operating system files on the backup against the current running Operating system, if these have changed the Microsoft Recovery method (or BartPE with AISBackup Plug-in) is recommended instead of the over-the-top method of restore.

If AISBackup defaults to Normal then the restore is completed by restarting the PC. The choice remains because the Recovery Console / BartPE method is more secure if there is power loss during the restore as AISBackup duplicates the Operating system on disk - and then swaps them with the Recovery Console or BartPE.

  • Click Next. Wait for AISBackup to calculate which files actually need restoring.

  • When restoring the Operating System over the top of the current running Operating System and the operating system is Windows XP or Windows 2000 you are reminded that you will have to complete the restore using the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • Because there are so many files involved there may be a short interlude before the above prompt is displayed. This prompt summarises the restore process. click Yes to proceed.

  • AISBackup will defer the restore of in-use files until the PC is re-booted.

  • The restore will now start by asking for the first CD of the set to be loaded, follow the on screen prompts.

  • When the backup finishes you may be required to restart the PC in order to restore the in-use files and Registry.

  • If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP you will be required to use the Microsoft Recovery console to switch between the current operating system and the version just restored. Please see here for details.

If you have chosen to restore your PC to an earlier date, say or month or two back, the AISBackup Backup Contents file's may be out of synch (if they were held on the C: drive). you can bring them back up to date by using the Manage Backup / Import Backup Contents File option. If a backup job is no longer in the list of jobs choose Tools / Load Job From Backup Media instead.

Windows 2000 & XP Microsoft Recovery Console.
