How to thin overgrown backup set

Post by Hughg »

Hi Barry -- my main backup set has got way too big, and I need to thin it out. I use Advanced Session Management (7 daily, 5 weekly, 25 monthly, retain none made on or just after these dates), but there are zip files that go back to 2014 despite that. Is there a way of doing a fresh "thinning" of the backup set so that it forces these retention rules on the whole set?

Hi Hugh

The older zip files contain files that are still in the retained sessions that have not changed since they were backed up. You could use the Manage Backup / Validate (Test) Backup option which will tidy up the backup if there were any files removed from the backup and the ‘prune zip files’ option was not set.

Cheers, Barry
