Version 2 (beta)

Post by Brian E »

The Web site says this about the new versions of AIS Backup:-
Advanced session handling for intelligent auto-pruning of disk based backups.
Could you explain this to me in more detail Barry? Thanks.

Session handling

Post by Barry »

Hi Brian

Please see the thread started by K. D. Moyers: “Proposal for Alternate Session Purge Method”.

Essentially our customers who backup to disk drives wanted AISBackup to be able to prune midpoint sessions rather than always the oldest backup as it is often more desirable to keep copies of ld backup data, e.g. month end backups.

AISBackup has been updated to allow any number of ‘today’s’, daily (which is a set of the retained ‘today’s backups), weekly and monthly backups. This fits quite well with some business practises where there is month end and week end processing that should be retained. It is now also possible to mark backups as ‘retain’ (right click the session via the sessions tab) so that they are not auto-pruned.

This scheme will also work with RW CD/DVD media but they are not as reliable as external hard drives given the maximum (and perhaps optimistic) 1000 time re-write capability. However DVD-RAM should be okay with 10,000 time re-write capability. As far as know there is only 1 company (LG) that supply a writer that burns DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM as well as all the current CD formats.
