Copy backup to external Blu-ray failed on disk 5 of 6

Hi,
Thank you for continuing to support AIS Backup!

AisBackup 5.2.0.488
Windows 7, latest (final?) updates

Blu-ray drive - D:HL-DT-ST BD-RE WJ16NS40
Database - C:\ProgramData\Aquarius IS Consultancy\AISBackup\Database\
App Data - C:\ProgramData\Aquarius IS Consultancy\AISBackup\
Backup Destination - K:\Backups\Nightly7\Nightly7.aib

I have a nightly user data backup job to (a second) hard disk and I am attempting to copy it out to blu-ray (50GB) disks for off-site storage before we finally make the plunge into windows 10. (It's about 300GB because I keep 14 daily, 6 weekly and all monthly sessions since 2014. Yeah, I should probably prune those monthly ones...)

On disk 5 of 6 the tool failed to recognize the blank disk. (I'm sorry, I did not write down the specific message as I should have). Tried with multiple blank disks. Windows could see the inserted disk, and DVD Identifier could read the disk attributes just fine, but I could not get the tool to continue with the copy operation. I tried "reload" and "continue" to no avail, and eventually had to select "abort", as no other options would continue.

Now I have only the first four disks (all tested good), and I would like to have the "copy to CD or DVD" resume with disk 5.

In the "Copy Backup to CD or DVD" dialog I clicked "Remove Damaged Disk" and un-checked disk 5, then selected "Add CDs". However, when I click OK, it wants to start with Disk 6.

I tried also "Add to last CD", but then it just cycled through "insert disk 04", "disk 04 is full", "insert a blank disk", "insert disk 04"... repeatedly.

The nightly backup job has run again since I started this process.
As these 50GB BD-R disks are not inexpensive I am hoping there is some way to persuade the tool to re-start the copy from disk 5.

Thanks for your help.
Best Regards,

I may be misinterpreting the messages.
Now I get the following when I try the above.

Followed by the message:
"You are advised to run the Manage Backup /Validate (test) Backup option to correct 381254 error(s) in the file database) [OK]"
After OK, more work happens, then:

You require 2 blank BLU-RAYs [me: OK, that sounds right]
Click OK: To start the copy to BLU-RAY using AISBackup Disc Writer
Click OWN: If you wish to create the BLU-RAY's using a third party Disc mastering program.
Click CANCEL to Abort

At the same time, I notice in the log:
"Copying Database for Disc Volume: WIN7HOME4_D06"

So, again with the disk #6 and forgetting Disk 5.
"Cancel" that....

I did run "Validate Backup" and it found no errors, but I did not repair the contents file.
I don't think the issue is with "Nightly7"; the issue is with the copy to CD job
"Nightly7_Disc User Data", which seems to live in the same backup directory as Nightly7.

Any thoughts on how I get disk 5?
Thanks and Best Regards,

Hi Jeff

Which method of making the discs did you use, 'Mastered Joliet Format Disc' or 'Universal Disc Format'?

it may take a while to try and emulate the same conditions of the failure you had.

Hi, Barry,

It's using "Mastered Joliet Format".

Hi Jeff

It is a real shame that the backup re-ran as this will likely create different disc layouts if earlier backups are pruned. However there is a file that contains the contents of each disc for the current copy, and from this it should be possible to recreate disc 5 - even if an option needs to be added to AISBackup to do this. Please e-mail the file <jobname>_Disc.cdi, this is in the backup destination folder, I will be able see from this file the files that should have been written to Disc 5.

I just aborted a backup on disc 5 here and unfortunately it restarted from disc 5 and not disc 6, I guess it worked as it should. I am not sure if in the backup destination folder you can see a disc 5 sub-folder, if so you could burn the disc manually using the contents of this folder.

I would let the copy job continue to make the remaining disc (6) and then I will work on getting disc 5 recreated for you.

Hi Jeff

To be honest I have not used this feature for years but I have an answer.

When a disc is removed the files will be reselected but added to a new disc. I removed disk_05 and re-ran the copy and the exact same files on disk_05 were reselected to be written to disk_09.

Hi, Barry,
Thanks for checking into this.

I'll go ahead and let it start with Disk 06 and just make a note on the disk that there's no disk 5.
Do you have any suggestion how to check that restoring from this media (after "open job from backup media") will not get stuck looking for a disk 5?

Thanks and Best Regards,

Hi Jeff

The overall copy should have the same 6 discs, with 6 and 7 following disc 4. You can see the contents of each disc by opening the 'cdi' file with notepad (drag and drop onto an open notepad document).

The numerous error messages may be left over from some test code and will be removed in the next release.

I don't think the copy to optical disc option is used much anymore as external disk drives are cheaper, faster and probably more reliable than Blu-ray discs.
