What is MpSfc.bin?

Post by jlittle »

Last night on a backup, the file MpSfc.bin couldn't be backed up. I can't find anything to tell me what that is. Do I need to back it up?
I'm using version 2.9.0.400 on win7 Home.
Thanks

File not backed up: Possible solution.

Post by Barry »

I have seen a problem where a file is logically deleted but still showing in Windows Explorer. If possible please try and locate the file in Windows Explorer and try doing something with it, e.g. right click properties or moving it. You may get a message like 'the specified file does not exist'.

If I am correct then following a reboot the file will no longer be there and the backup should work.

I have only seen this problem once so cannot replicate the problem to put a suitable fix in AISBackup.

Another possibility is that there is a disk corruption or anti-virus software is denying access to the file. AISBackup would show the same error if antivirus software prevents a file from being accessed.

There is an update to AISBackup available from the version you are using.

Well, this is very weird. I tried finding the file doing a search of just the file name and my search program came up empty. So I opened AISB, looked in the log to get the location of the file, and there it was! And it seems to be fine; I was able to open its properties, and everything looks normal. This is its complete name: C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans\History\CacheManager\MpSfc.bin.
Does it mean anything to you?
Thanks
PS: There were some other files that couldn't backup but I've seen that before (log files and .edb files) and I just excluded them. But I've never seen this MpSfc file before.

File not backed up

Did you try restarting the PC and re-running the backup?

Given the location the file is not required (history of Windows Defender scans)

The file does not exist on this Windows 7 PC

yes, there was no error message about the file this time.

Then I'll just exclude that whole history folder.

That just seems really weird to me!

Thanks for your help.

It's been tagged by ESET as malicious but no news so far if it's a false positive. Were you able to move this already?
