Can I restore Windows 7 like this?

Post by jlittle »

With Windows XP, if I needed to restore the OS partition because of a crash or whatever, I would do a fresh install of Windows then restore my latest backup over it. It always worked like a charm. Can I do the same thing with Win7?
Thanks
John

Windows 7 full restore

Post by Barry »

There are some files in Windows that cannot be restored 'over the top', this is also true of Windows XP. I recommend using an AISBackup restore CD or the Windows 7 set-up DVD, indeed it is also possible to restore Windows 7 using a Windows Vista set-up DVD.

There is a plan to make a video to show how to restore Windows 7 using the Windows 7 set-up DVD, however this is documented here:

and a PDF download here: http://www.aiscl.co.uk/dl.php?p=2

A video for making and using the AISBackup restore CD can be found on this page:

Dual boot XP

Post by Barry »

Hi John

Did you post a message about making an XP / 7 dual boot system using an XP restore over the weekend?

I was going to suggest using a Virtual PC running on Windows 7 instead; this way you can run XP at the same time as Windows 7. Take a look at Oracle Virtual Box:

http://www.virtualbox.org/

You can use an AISBackup restore CD to make the restore in the virtual PC - I will make a video about this if you like.
