Run from scheduler while not logged on

Post by Nick Og »

I have AIS scheduled to run of an evening, unattended. All works fine except, it appears, if I don't leave the PC logged on. (I am using windows XP with a password protected account).

This morning, the CD was not ejected (as it usually is). I logged on, tried to run AIS - assuming it had not run while I was not logged in. It rjected the run since AIS was already running.

Here is a copy of the log. You can see that the step

8:31:27 PM CDW Mastering oit05 Started

did not end. I then shut down the PC and rebooted it

6:10:17 AM SSTART Backup Session: 7 Started on Wednesday, 26 March 2003 at 6:10:17 AM

but the CD is no longer recognised by AISBackup or Windows or Roxio. I have effectively lost the last CD of a backup set.

Any ideas? Is that a known bug? I am running ais 1.7.0.161. I have sent a copy of the bu report via e-mail.

Regards

Nick

Unattended Backup

Post by Barry »

Hi Nick

I have run a number of tests with AISBackup running under a User that is not logged on and can confirm the following problems:
  • If the program requests user interaction the program will effectively hang as there is no user from which to get a response.

If the completion message is requested notepad is launched and will just sit there until the PC is booted or the task is terminated.
The only way to terminate AISBackup when it is this state is via Task Manager or restart the PC.

AISBackup will be changed so that it can run without interaction at all, basically AISBackup will be terminated if it needs to interact with a User, e.g. the wrong or no CD is loaded.

I am pretty sure that the CD mastering process failed, as you said the CD is no longer recognisable. At the point of failure AISBackup would ask if the CD should be re-created, obviously nobody could answer this prompt so AISBackup appeared to hang.

You may remove the CD from the backup, and therefore the files that still exist will be re-selected for backup next time, by using the Manage Backup / Backup Maintenance / Remove Volumes.

Removing volumes

Post by Nick Og »

Hi Barry,

Thanks for the reply - will keep my eye out for later versions. The remove volumes tip is useful - at least that doesn't force one into prematurely starting a new set from scratch.

A question/suggestion/request - is there a more detailed 'technical' manual around? I have the Chapter 1 - Intro and getting started but I feel a need for something 'deeper'. I had better go look on the site to see if there is anything more that I have missed.

Beta update

Post by Barry »

Hi Nick

I have found that reducing the write speed can help with some CD writers / CD media can improve the quality and hence allow the validate phase to work. Changes have been made to the test phase which should improve error recovery.

This beta version also includes a new 'un-attended' mode command line parameter which will cause AISBackup to terminate itself if it needs to interact with a User. The new parameter is X, just add this after the | character but before the 'days of the week' parameters (if present), alternatively use the new Manage Backup / Auto Run This Script menu option to set up a new job.

New CD Driver has fixed the problem

Post by Nick Og »

I have downloaded the latest Roxio CD drivers (5.3.4.21). That seems to have fixed the problem.

I am left with one oddity. The backup appears to have run OK - the CD was ejected etc - but I was presented with this text.

Any idea why and what it signifies?

AISBackup Finished: 5/04/2003 8:09:06 PM

Script: aoit

Scheduled Backup Phase:A full restore using this session may not be safe

89 File(s) were backed up and tested successfully

Hi Nick

The message is incorrect and will be fixed in the next beta. The 'May not be safe' message.

Also:

We can now detect whether AISBackup if running interactively or under an accout that is not logged on, so the new 'X' parameter will be removed (or rather ignored so that you do not have to change the parameter line).
