Rename and move backup files without causing full backup?

Post by JeffBuckles »

Hello,
We are running AIS Backup version 2.7.0.348 on Windows XP Pro SP3.
Our configuration uses two PCs:
Server1 has the projects disk and is running AIS Backup
Server2 has the backup disk. The backup destination is
\\Server2\Backup

Server 1 Server2
----------- ----------
/Projects /Backup
(Running
AISBackup)

The backup job is, of course, named "ProjBkup".
At this time there are no other backup jobs defined.

So, somehow I fat-fingered the job setup and I
have the following problems on the /Backup disk:

1) Backup files are all in the root of the backup disk.
* I expected they would be under /Backup/ProjBkup
2) Backup files are named _###.zip
* I expected they would be named ProjBkup_###.zip

My question is how to best resolve this without triggering
a complete backup reset. I suppose I can live with the wrong
file names, but I do need to move the files into a folder.

I tried using "change backup destination" but it failed with
the message: DT40230.9217937269 ERR Projects Copy source file does not exist: R:\_#
... and so on. (the backup drive is mounted locally as R:,
but this device name is not named as the backup destination)
Yet "Validate Backup" succeeds.

Unfortunately the backup has been running nightly for some
weeks before I discovered this and there is about 180 GB of
backup data so far. So it is not so simple to just reset the backup
and start over.

I have tools to batch-rename files and I'm not averse t
editing the binary .BUZ or .DBD files if necessary.

How would you suggest I resolve this with a minimum
of disruption to the state of the backup?
Thank you and Best Regards,

Move backup manually

Post by Barry »

I have not seen this problem for a long time and the last time it happened the user reset and recreated the backup before the problem could be fixed.

AISBackup does not allow a backup to be made to the root of a local drive, however it is possible to manually create a job to backup to the root of a network drive (or rather a network share - which for AISBackup should be a share 'pointing' to a sub folder).

I made a backup job to mirror yours then made a sub-folder on the same network share (actually I was working directly on the PC containing the share) and then moved the backup to the new folder.

On the PC containing the backup job I used the Manage Backup / Remove Backup Job From List and chose the Keep option to keep the actual backup.

Then use the Tools / Open Job from Backup Media option and use the open file dialogue to locate the backup contents file in the new folder.

Choose re-instate / networked external drive (yes even if the destination isn't an external drive) / restore only No (or you will lose the file list selected for backup).

The create new job option in AISBackup will be updated to minimise the risk of this kind of problem.

It would be fairly complex to rename the backup files, but this can be done if you really want to, however if the folder is given a meaningful name this should suffice.

Had I not been out of the office all last week I would have replied sooner. As always, your support was prompt and helpful. The problem is resolved.

Thank you and Best Regards,
