AISFAM on Terminal Server

Post by lmeyer »

Hello,
Printing was not working on my Terminal Server Win 2008 R2. It was due to a conflict with AISFAM. Apparently the same problem could arise if an antivirus program is scanning network shares.

I could continue using AISFAM if:
- there were a possibility to deactivate it on the network shares and having it control only the hard disk
- or if I could start the FAM service just before backing up, and stopping it after, and still be able to backup exclusively opened files.

Is there one of the two possibilities?

Thanks for your relpy

AISFAM

I will pass this to VW Solutions for their comment, but first please try the following to see if the print job will work while AISFAM is paused.

AISBackup does enable AISFAM after backup just in case a backup is made from a remote computer as AISBackup has the ability to backup opened exclusive files over a network as long as the PC running AISBackup and the remote PC are both running AISFAM.

Please try the following and if it works AISBackup will be changed to optionally leave AISFAM 'paused' after backup:

If the AISFAM keys are not in the systray run File Access Manager for AISBackup.

Right click the 'keys' in the systray and select Pause

Try your print job.

Alternatively start AISBackup and do nothing - AISBackup always pauses AISFAM while AISBackup is running but idle. It is when AISBackup is closed that AISFAM is put back into a running state. While AISBackup is open and idle try the print job.

Hello Barry,

Sorry for the delay.
I can install AISFAM, but I cannot run the Program to get the keys to the tray, since I'm out of the trial period.

After installing (even though out of trial period), I can no longer print.
Opening AISBackup does not help.

Stopping the service using net stop famv4 on the command line enables me to print with no error.
After restarting the service I can no longer print.

I tried to backup using the following batch script
net start famv4
start /wait aisbackup "jobname|"
net stop famv4

I'm not able to back up exclusively open files. Sure, I'm out of trial period, so I cannot expect this to work...

Hello Barry,

I made some tests. No here's what I came up with:
1. The FAM service has three states:
- started: it is started automatically on system startup
- paused: it can be paused using the menu of the tray icon. It is paused when AISBackup is running but idle
- stopped: with net stop famv4

2. Printing works if AISFAM is stopped. It gives 1 error and the page comes out when it's paused. It gives many errors and no page comes out if it's started

3. If AISFAM is working even when it is paused: It keeps exclusively open files accessible. But it has no effect when it is stopped.

My configuration
- aisfam starts automatically on startup.
- I stop it using net stop. People can then work and print.
- By night I start the service. 60 seconds later I launch the backup job.

This way I got only 3 files that could not be backed up, instead of over 40 without aisfam.

This result is now near satisfactory, even if it is still risky for a full restore.
I will watch closely the logs the next few days, and keep you informed.

Failed files

The next version of AISBackup will honour the Windows FilesNotToBackup list (this is s registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup. It could be that the files that fail to backup should not be backed up. Please post the file names.

There is a non network version of AISFAM I will arrange for you to download and try that version.

Here are the four files that failed the last backup:

C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.LOG1
C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0
C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0
C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS

Thanks for the arrangement for the non-network version of AISFAM

These files are:

C:\windows\system32\config.log1 would not be required

C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS is part of the registry I will run a test by restoring a Server 2008 without this file.

C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0
C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0

I think these are used for activation validation, if these were missing Windows would require activation. I will also test this (May take a few days).

The non-network version of AISFAM has been uploaded to:
