Validate/ test Problem

Post by rkelly »

I have never managed to run a backup test/validate with any success and as no-one else has reported this, I figure it is something I am doing! Anyone any thoughts?

I am using version 2.4.0.303, but problem also occurred on earlier versions. I am backing up to a file-share on a NAS server and all backups appear to complete successfully. Restore also seem to work with no problems. The share does not have a drive letter associated with it, but is mapped by AISBackup as required. I go to Manage Backup/Validate (Test) Backup and the dialogue pops up. I click on Load Backup Files and the directory selected is the right one. I select a file (tried first, last and one in the middle) and then kick off the validate. The results pop up almost instantly and tell me nothing matches and that all my no matches have been removed. As this point I have to reload the contents file. Running on Win XP Pro fully patched.

Testing NAS Backup

Post by Barry »

This should work the same as a network backup - and this works here when the network drive letter AISBackup has pre-assigned is used. If AISBAckup is not pre-mapping the NAS does it work if you pre-map the drive and use that drive letter. Not ideal but a work around.

Which NAS are you using?

Pre-Mapping the drive letter does not help. The NAS is a fairly generic one from Maplins. The firmware says it is "Network Storage Series" and is also running a fairly common firmware "NAS-BASIC48".

Running the validate again, I noticed the log has some message about removing redundant sessions - no idea why, but I guess this is the cause...

It says "Mobile Landisk External Net Storage" on the side.

Validate on External LAN Disk

Post by Barry »

The LAN Disk is not returning filenames with standard Windows API FindFirstFile, FindNextFile when fuzzy matching is used, e.g. \\LANDISK\External1\Backups\Test\Test*.zip, however if \\LANDISK\External1\Backups\Test\*.* is used then the LAN Disk correctly returns the name of all files and folders. What do we expect from a 30 quid LAN Disk?

I attached the disk using the USB cable and everything works properly, however this is not the solution.

The problem also means a ‘files of type’ backup will not work on a backup of this LAN disk – this will not be fixed as the fault is with the LAN disk and not AISBackup.

The Validate option will be fixed as AISBackup can do the filtering of file names. The fix will be made to version 2.5 of AISBackup.

Not seeing files on LAN Disk

Post by Barry »

This has opened up a can of worms:

The following options needed fixing for the LAN disk:

Validate Backup
Open Backup from Media
Reset Backup
Delete backup

Tests of AISBackup are been run

Build 308 of AISBackup has been uploaded, this fixes the problems with my Maplin LANDisk, so I expect it does with yours too :D

http://www.aiscl.co.uk/downloadaisbackup.php

It's slow isn't it? but good enough for AISBackup's incremental style of backup.

Changes have also been made to the external drive section of AISBackup to include LAN Disk's and NAT's.

Many thanks Barry, looks like that fixed it for me.

Slow is a compliment for this device! However as it is just used as a backup destination and was ridiculously cheap I will not complain!
