backup/restore without keeping full path?

Post by JeffBuckles »

Here is what I want to do:
  • Backup C:\A\B\C\123.fil
    Restore to C:\D\E\F\123.fil
Instead, it would appear I have only the following two options:
  • Backup C:\A\B\C\123.fil
    Restore C:\A\B\C\123.fil
Or
  • Backup C:\A\B\C\123.fil
    Restore C:\D\E\F\A\B\C\123.fil
Both backup/restore and disk-to-disk-copy behave the same way.

Is there any way to use AISBackup to do this:
  • Backup C:\A\B\C\123.fil
    Restore to C:\D\E\F\123.fil
?

(This is a simplified example -- just copying the files will not work here. The actual application is to copy one user's windows profile to another user's profile, including registry settings)

Thanks and Best Regards,
Barry

Greater control over restore

Post by Barry »

Open the destination folder in Windows Explorer

Open the backup folders in AISBackup

Select the root tree in the tree view side of the restore files form so that all the files and folders you require to restore are selcted in one click of the mouse, then move the cursor to the list side of the view, then drag and drop one of the selected folders / files onto Windows Explorer. Answer the restore prompts as normal (do not drag and drop from the tree side or the 'username' folder will be in the root of the destination rather than the contents of 'username').

Please let me know if this has the desired restore result.

Barry,
Thanks for the suggestion.

I *think* I followed your instructions:
  • Made a backup to disk of my original user profile.

Opened the destination folder in windows explorer (C:\Documents and Settings\New_Profile)

Selected "Restore from Backup". Then in the "Select Files to Restore" dialog I select in the left-hand folders pane the root of the folder I want to restore (New_Profile)

Then in the right hand pane I grab one of the selected folders and drag it into the windows explorer window (right-hand pane)
However, when I get to the "Preview files to restore" dialog I see the destination is:
Preview Files
__Local Disk ( C: )
____Documents and Settings
______New_Profile
________Documents_and_Settings
__________Old_Profile
____________(old_profile contents being restored)

What I was hoping to see was:
Preview Files
__Local Disk ( C: )
____Documents and Settings
______New_Profile
________(old_profile contents being restored)

So either I didn't do it right or else it didn't work. I'm using version 2.3.1 build 298 on Windows 2000.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks and Best Regards,
Barry

Drag and drop restore

It's the preview that is wrong - and this will get fixed. The actual restore works - try it with a folder containing a couple of files onto the desktop.

Preview wrong, restore okay.
