Where does AIS compress over LAN

Post by Brian »

When I run a backup over LAN on what PC is the compressing done?
a] The PC that contains the files to be backed up?
b] The PC that runs the AIS program.

Compression

Post by Barry »

The compression is always done on the PC running AISBackup. We have an experimental client server version where the compression is done on the PC been backed up - the compression is done in a service running on each client PC.

Maybe you could also consider another way of handling things.

A client on each PC that only sends data to the backup server where the data is processed.

I'm forced to have 2 copies of AIS installed because when I run my backups from my backup PC AIS can't look inside 'Program Files' because windows protects that area.
But a local AIS has no problems with that.
A little client module could overcome that problem.

AIS backup Client

Post by Barry »

The client does do that - communication is via TCP/IP so should work over a WAN as well as a LAN. A client server version of AISBackup is in the design stage with ideas for efficient backup in a multiple PC environment. Needs a lot of work, a lot of testing - and then a lot of sales to make the work worthwhile

Restore uses the standard AISBackup.
