Advanced Session Management

Post by IanA »

I'm finding it hard to get my head around potentially conflicting backup options...

In 'Change Backup Job Sessions' screen, I presume the 'Keep |All| Sessions' doesn't apply when 'Advanced Session Management' is selected, and if this is the case could the option be disabled when 'Advanced Session Management' is selected, to make it clearer?

In 'Advanced Session Management' screen, if I opt to "keep 2 of today's backup sessions, delete excess sessions Next Backup Day" and "Retain 20 Daily Backup Sessions"...
- Do the 20 Daily Backup Sessions include today's 2 or are they in addition to today's 2?
- If I run the job 10 times today, does it keep all 10 until tomorrow in addition to 20 daily sessions?
- And if I run the job 10 times today, it should prune them down to 2 on the next backup day, so when will it prune the 2 down to 1 and do the 2 sessions count towards the 20 maximum sessions?

In a similar vain, if I "Retain 10 Monthly Backup Sessions made on or just after these dates:" and select 2 days of the month to retain a backup session, will it retain 5 months of 2 backup sessions per month (max 10 sessions) or retain 10 months of 2 backup sessions per month (max 20 sessions)?

Could be good to have a detailed example or two in the help files with detailed explanation of what sessions are kept on each day/week/month - maybe a simple table showing what is available on what day?

I'm off for a coffee and valium!

Thanks

Ian

Advanced sessions

Post by Barry »

Daily backups keep the set of backups retained each day, so if 2 backups are kept each day after 5 days you will have up to 2 backups for each day, i.e. 10, the number of today's backups are determined by the 'delete next backup day' parameter.

Weekly and monthly and day of month backups only keep the latest backup from each set, i.e. 1 backup, unless the daily count is still in force, i.e. a daily count of 14 and a weekly value of 4 will have 4 backups for the latest two weeks and one backup for the oldest two weeks.

Any backup session may be retained by right clicking a session and choosing Disable Auto Prune (Keep this session).

You can demonstrate the affect by changing the date while running multiple backups of the AISBackup database folder (as this changes after each backup).

3 backups were run each day except 3 July 2006 where 6 were run (I forgot to change the day), here is the session log – note: no backup exists prior to session 93 so I need not have run so many for this demonstration. The dates are in British format of Day/Month/Year:

Thanks Barry - I'll take a look at your reply when my brain's up to it.

Really like the idea of backing up the future though (July 2006!), when's that option due for release? Or are you all wannabe Time Lords in Cardiff these days?

Advanced Sessions wording

Post by IanA »

After trying it for myself I think I now understand Advanced Sessions!

And now that I understand it, I think the wording on the Advanced Session Management screen is very misleading…

“Retain 3 of today’s backup sessions”
“Retain 7 Daily Backup Sessions”

This surely implies that only 7 Daily Backup Sessions will be kept, when the reality is that 7 days of sessions will be retained.
And to me, 3 of today’s backup sessions is NOT talking about any other day than today, but in reality it means 3 sessions per day (including today).

If I’ve understood it correctly, could it not be more clearly worded, something like…

Retain 3 sessions per day for 7 days
Prune excess daily sessions the 1.Same Day 2.Next Backup Day

This might seem irrelevant for me (now that I know what it really means) but I probably won’t change Advanced Sessions for months, if not a year. So I’m probably going to have to work it out all over again when I do!

I hope I've made myself clear! :?

Thanks again for all the effort you put in to help me to understand it.

Cheers

Ian
