I recently installed AIS to boot 2 hard drives Primary master Win XP &
Sec master Win ME.Select XP it boots fine,select ME & message said
hal.dll & ntoskrnl.exe files missing from Windows\system32 so I down
loaded them & installed in System32 OK,now when I select ME drive to
boot I get message "Windows could not start because of software error,
load needed Dlls for kernel".The ME hard drives boots OK on its own.
Any thoughts please?Cheers Eddie.

Boot Manager

Windows ME (and all other Windows 95 style systems) must be the primary master when using Microsoft's boot manager. The Hal.dll is for NT style operating systems only. I suggest you swap the drives and copy the boot files to the ME disk. You may need to make the ME drive recognise the boot menu by starting a Windows XP installation as shown here:

http://www.aiscl.co.uk/dual_boot_system.htm

Please let me know if the web-page helps, if not let us know where there is a problem and I will get it updated.

Here is a boot menu for ME on disk 0 and XP on disk 1, the ME must be on a primary, active drive. Please also note that disk's number from 0 and partition's number from 1.

Code: Select all

[boot loader]
Timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
c:\="Microsoft Windows ME"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /FASTDETECT
