Backup files since last session after WinXP reinstallation

Post by wj_nyc »

I recently did a clean installation of WinXP Pro to replace WinXP Home, and re-partitioned HDD afterwards, now, AISBackup wants to backup everthing instead of files that were changed/added before/after WinXP Pro installation because both the source drive & destination drive path have changed. Since I usually like to do a clean Windows installation every year and re-partition HDD based on need for space, it would be painful to backup the same folders/files over and over everytime windows is reinstalled or change of drive letters.

Is there a way to force AISBackup to recognize the previous source/destination and automatically redirect the old path to the new path and backup only files that are changed after last backup regardless the system change? Many thanks!

Moving data to another drive

Post by Barry »

You can tell AISBackup that files have moved to another drive, this is effectively what you are doing. However AISBackup will not recognise folder name changes.

To illustrate this were Old Windows is on drive D: and New Widows is on drive E:

On new Windows install AISBackup and use the Manage Backup / Load script from backup option to install the D: drive backup job (script).

Choose the menu item Manage Backup / Backup Maintenance.

Right click D: and choose Move Folder and Sub-Folders.

Choose the new drive E: (The next phase takes quite a long time and may look like the program has stopped responding – on XP not responding may appear in the caption bar).

To the ‘Do you want to change the backup job to back up from drive E: instead of drive D:’ choose Yes.

Select Save.

AISBackup will now calculate the backup based on the new location of the files.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like if the change is in the source path, then the method you mentioned works fine, but if both path (source/destination) are changed, like if drive letters for source/destination no longer exist after new Windows installation, then no matter what I do it resets itself to backup everything mode instead of what's new/modified.

Moving Files (or re-installing windows to another drive)

Post by Barry »

It does not matter if the drive no longer exists but if the folder names are different AISBackup will see them as new folders & files. As long as you keep to the same naming convention over each of your builds everything should be okay.
