Securing the C: Drive - Part 2

Here are the instructions for creating a 'C:' drive backup, if your operating system is on another disk please substitute the appropriate drive letter. We will create a Session variety of backup job as this gives the opportunity to re-load your C: drive to any date that a successful backup was made. Successful backup defines that there were no files skipped because AISBackup was not able to backup one or more files (the files that are skipped are listed in the Log File.)

This example shows the instructions for creating a backup job using all of the features of AISBackup, there is a '4 clicks of the mouse' option which is able to create a backup job using the commonly used default parameters described here.

In this example we will be backing to CD-R using the AISBackup integrated CD Writer.

You should consider making at least 2 backup's of your system, just in case a CD becomes un-readable. Actually the same applies to backup's to any media, not just CD.

Creating the Backup Job

  • From the main form Click New Job.

  • Select option 2 and then select the appropriate disk drive.

  • Click Next.

  • Choose option 1 A CD using the AISBackup CD Writer.

  • Click Next.

  • Enter the name of the backup job, here we have used the name CDrv the CD stage area is where AISBackup stores each CD's data prior to burning to CD. There must be at least the capacity of the CD's capacity available disk space.

  • Enter the Volume Prefix this is used to identify each CD in a multi CD backup. Here we have used BACKUP_C_ so each CD will be automatically labelled BACKUP_C_01, BACKUP_C_02 etc.

  • Optionally select Backup Opened Exclusive Files but remember this only works with files on local FAT disks.

  • Click Next.

  • Leave Session Based Backup selected.

  • Click Next.

  • If you would like to fine tune the selected files click Yes to the Do you want to review? ... prompt. To view the Select Files Options, click here.

  • Once the files have been selected click OK. Then wait for AISBackup to calculate the files that it needs to backup.

  • The form above shows that there is almost 10 gigabytes of data to back up on the C: drive. Click Run to start the backup. 258 files and 9 folders (containing an unknown number of files) have been excluded from the backup.

This completes the scenario for creating a Secure C: drive backup. You may have other drives that you wish to backup, indeed this backup need not have just contained the C: drive.
